In this article, we review studies trying to understand the brain changes associated with mental illness from a network perspective. This combines the latest techniques in brain imaging with mathematical modelling to map, in unprecedented detail, how the brain is affected by different psychiatric disorders and to model the physiological mechanisms that underlie these changes. This new approach to thinking about mental illness opens a lot of opportunities but also presents some challenges to researchers that must be overcome before the full potential of a network-based perspective can be realised.
